Smaug by Isvoc Smaug by Isvoc
I don't post traditional art often nowadays. Nice change!
To be honest, I started to sketch this one without paying much of attention. At the beginning I didn't thought I'll color or finish this piece.
Happily ~enigmaticworld gave me his brushes [my whole brush-box got destroyed... sadly. One of a reason why I don't post much of a traditional stuff] and I decided to finish it. This is fully colored with watercolors and brushwork! I don't think I ever did watercolor-only colorwork before. It was fun and I want to do it again soon! In big part it was inspired by *Mystalia's artworks.

That's partially my vision of Smaug. Design is a total mishmash, I'm not fully happy about it. In fact, it was an effect of mindless sketching. There are some parts from book descriptions I really wanted to follow - colors, gem armor, ears and snake-ish, curly body... but rest is just made up without thinking. Against everything I really wanted to add horns.

In the end - I like it a lot! I really feel like rebuilding my tools and supplies to make more traditional art. I realized how much I missed it. Especially when it's not rushed.

Painted with watercolors over pencil sketch.
12"x18" / a bit bigger than A3.

This is one of the best Smaug designs or any dragon design I have seen. I Love it! Especially the design of his face and head. I'm glad you added horns because I think dragons look better and more fierce and powerful with them. His face reminds me a bit of the Red Dragon from Dungeons and Dragons. Is this art inspired by that at all? I think it would be awesome if you did this through digital art and other view angles of this.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like my own twist on character. I didn't directly use any inspirations, but I see where Red Dragon could fit! I personally love them, they are visually my favourite dragons from D&D :) Thanks a lot again!

no, not Smaug, I will complain to all Smaug "artists" he is lion faced, furry cheeks and fur down his spin, missing a scale on his chest, VERY red, cat eared and has an under bite, you got the red right though, but ew, he's not that muscular.

You are free to disagree, but as I said in description - that's in big part my own vision loosely based on Tolkien's artwork [ www.hobbit.ca/Smaug-Tolkien2.j… ] and only general directions from books. And most important - I didn't even try to follow version of his design from animated movie.

mindlessly sketching is less mindless than you would think. Your subconscious has everything stored and when you are accessing that information. even without thinking about it, it can be very accurate. 80% of the stuff you glance at can be completely unusual and you would never notice because you only glanced at it and your subconscious filled in the details.. so it was a very thoughtful sketch xD

Podoba mi się Twoja wizja. Smok jest dopracowany, dopieszczony kolorystycznie. Typowy smok z wyglądu, taki, do jakiego chyba przyzwyczaiła nas wyobraźnia i różne prace, do tego ogólnym konceptem pasujący do książkowego. Miło popatrzeć.

Beautiful! I love how you balanced the fine detailing on his face and chest with the large sweep of color for his wings without any one part of the painting overwhelming the rest.

HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE TO DRAW??? Can you send me private message what kind of book you use for sturing art or small introduction how you become an artist and why did you choose to be one.

Hello! I may disappoint you, but I don't have any book to mention! ;) I just simply tired to draw and fell in love with it. It got deeper and more intense over years and eventually became what you can see here. It just love doing it, that's whole secret :)
